Throughout our Flags for Heroes campaign, we've had the privilege of learning about the incredible veterans who have served our country with courage and dedication. These stories, filled with sacrifice and resilience, serve as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of patriotism.
We’re honored to share the story of Stan Nelson, a true American hero who turned 104 on September 22.
Story submitted by Steve Guider: "Stan is my hero. He turned 104 years old on September 22. Stan served as a comminications officer aboard the LCI 492. His LCI dropped troops 4 times onto Omaha Beach on D-Day. 1000 troops in total. He is the only surviving member of his ship. Stan was also a legendary football coach at Anoka High School in Anoka, MN. I have known Stan since 1984 when I had him as a football coach at Blaine High School, in Blaine, MN. Stan is tough as they come. He has flown the American Flag ever since I have known him. At 104 years, Stan lives alone and still mows his own yard. He is as tough as they come. Stan is a true American Hero as is so deserving of a flag."
Thank you, Stan, for your honorable service, sacrifice, and dedication.
