Throughout our Flags for Heroes campaign, we've had the privilege of learning about the incredible veterans who have served our country with courage and dedication. These stories, filled with sacrifice and resilience, serve as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of patriotism.
We’re honored to share the story of Shawn Austin, a courageous Army veteran whose service in Bosnia reflects his steadfast commitment to his country.
Story submitted by Noel Austin “Shawn served in the army from 1993-1997. In 1996, he (and most of his battalion) were sent to Bosnia for a peacekeeping operation. He was there for about 6 weeks when one night while on patrol he came across an intruder to their camp. Shawn was shot by the intruder. Shawn returned fire and then walked back to the medic’s tent. He was flown to Hungary for surgery and was sent back to Baumholder (his stationed post) for six weeks before returning to Bosnia until his company was sent back to Baumholder (approximately October 1996).. We were married and I was living in Baumholder while he was in Bosnia. He was shot March 15, 1996. While back in Bosnia he was awarded the Purple Heart. Since getting out of the army, he went back to school with VA assistance and received a bachelor’s in respiratory care from Tennessee State University (2003). He has worked in the medical field in some sort of capacity since 1997. -Noel, wife of Shawn of 30 years."
Thank you, Shawn, for your honorable service, sacrifice, and dedication.
