Throughout our Flags for Heroes campaign, we've had the privilege of learning about the incredible veterans who have served our country with courage and dedication. These stories, filled with sacrifice and resilience, serve as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of patriotism.
We’re honored to share the story of Raymond Strozewski, a selfless Marine veteran who served with distinction during the Korean War.
Story submitted by Donna Woods: "My Dad, Sergeant Raymond B. Strozewski, United States Marine Corps, served from 1950-1954. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune in N. Carolina. As a Platoon Sergeant & Machine Gunner he fought in the Korean War. During his service he was wounded on 11/7/50. Raymond was shot in a lung & one arm. He was presented 2 Purple Hearts by a Colonel at a Naval Hospital in Japan where he was being treated. Having lost so many friends at war my Dad didn’t feel deserving of that recognition. He is a very proud man and was honored to serve in the Marines. He tried to refuse the metals requesting that the Marines honor another soldier who according to him “deserved them more.” Today we are blessed that my Dad & Mom are still with us. Although my Dad suffers greatly from medical issues and chronic pain he proudly cares for my Mom who has Dementia. Her struggles are great but he won’t give up. He stands by her side & refuses outside care other than his 6 children. He remains proud, strong and committed to his loved ones and will do so until the day he dies. My brothers and sisters and I carry with us great respect for our flag and the love of our Country and family because that is what we were taught from the day we were born."
Thank you, Raymond, for your honorable service, sacrifice, and dedication.
