Throughout our Flags for Heroes campaign, we've had the privilege of learning about the incredible veterans who have served our country with courage and dedication. These stories, filled with sacrifice and resilience, serve as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of patriotism.

We’re honored to share the story of Jacob Sones, a hero whose courage and selflessness define the spirit of the “Chosen Few” from the 173rd Airborne Chosen Company.

Story submitted by Phillip Sones: "Jacob is one of the “Chosen Few” from the 173rd Airborne Chosen Company. During the Battle of Wanat after standing on the hood of the Humvee to reload the Mark 19 under heavy enemy fire he heard Sgt Ryan Pitts say on the radio he was alone. Jacob was told don’t go up there you’ll die, he responded I don’t care Pitts ain’t dying alone. Sgt Garcia followed Jacob's run through heavy fire from 300 enemy that destroyed his SAW to get to Sgt Ryan Pitts. He dressed Pitts wounds allowing Pitts to continue calling for and communicating with the air support. Jacob and Pitts were hit with repeated RPG fire, one of which hit Sgt Garcia killing him. Sgt. Pitts was later awarded the Medal of Honor, Pitts made Jacob go to every ceremony, dinner, etc he had to go to that week. Pvt. Jacob Sones was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for Valor. 9 paratroopers died at that outpost that morning. Of the 47 paratroopers there 27 were wounded and 9 died."

Thank you, Jacob, for your honorable service, sacrifice, and dedication.
