Throughout our Flags for Heroes campaign, we've had the privilege of learning about the incredible veterans who have served our country with courage and dedication. These stories, filled with sacrifice and resilience, serve as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of patriotism.
We’re honored to share the story of Jonathan Colton Benton, a true hero and humble combat veteran who survived the Battle of Wanat with the courageous soldiers of the 173rd Airborne Chosen Company in Afghanistan.
Story submitted by Elizabeth Lindsey Benton: “My husband is a very humble combat veteran who survived the Battle of Wanat, Afghanistan, 2008 with the brave soldiers of 173rd Airborne Chosen Company. He is 100% disabled due to combat injuries yet he remains diligent to serve his fellow veterans through outdoor flyfishing retreat program, Wild Warrior Adventure. He never got a flag since he was medically retired out of Fort Carson through wounded warrior battalion (WTU) in 2013. He felt a little bit saddened that he never received a flag, nor even a farewell letter or retirement ceremony since his military service was abruptly cut short. I know he would be most grateful to receive a flag like this one day, though he would want it to go to a more catastrophic wounded veteran in his place. Down range at the time it came up for him to get a Purple Heart but he was on the award board & felt he did not deserve it since most of his brothers had lost limbs and or their lives."
Thank you, Jonathan, for your honorable service, sacrifice, and dedication.
